Barking Lot

Another group of shots from Astoria, Oregon. From the ship I could hear these sea lions off in the distance, and the further I walked up the path the louder it got.

I'm feeling sluggish

Walking down a bike path in Astoria, Oregon my mom and I came across this little guy. I spent a good 10 minutes lying on my chest on wet asphalt taking pictures of this slug, with sea lions barking in the background. One of the cooler experiences I've had.

Samantha, Newborn

I rarely do newborn portraits. Truth be told, I've always been nervous around babies. I grew up an only child in a small family, so I never held a sibling or cousin. The fragility of a baby is something that I am terrified of, but also fascinated by. I think that as adults one of the most incredible transformations you can make is to care for something other than yourself. To shepherd and raise another human.
Pictured below is Samantha. I took her photograph just before the new year. Her parents are awesome.

Erin Schaut

Chicago actress Erin Schaut. Not only did we get some great headshots, but we had some wonderful conversation. Here is her headshot and an outtake from the session.

Cape Disappointment

Cape Disappointment is anything but, for me anyway.  Lewis and Clark came here hoping to negotiate passage back to the east with a trading vessel. They eventually realized what a horrible place to camp it was and crossed the Columbia River to a more hospitable location, and built Fort Clatsop. They stayed on the coast for 105 days before getting restless and hopeless. They returned east overland and the rest is history.

Here at Cape Disappointment the Columbia River flows into the Pacific, though crashes is a better adjective. The waters are violent and pound into the coast. But it's a truly beautiful and raw site.

What do you think it is?

Shoot me a comment below with what you think this is a photograph of. And let me be clear, it's a photograph, with only a few minor edits. Tonal stuff. No pixel moving or anything.

The Devil's Tower

A month before my friend Mike was set to start basic training in the US Army, we decided to road trip it out west and catch some sights. On this day, we drove from our hotel in Deadwood, South Dakota to just inside of the Wyoming border to see Devils Tower. Mike is not known for his patience, and convincing him to stick around until the sun was right for this photo was a chore. But in the end I think it was worth it.
